Dear Day Camp Enthusiasts,
It is my pleasure to present this booklet to you on behalf of all the day camp
directors and program directors.
I hope that you find this guide to Cub Scout day camp informative and useful
as you make plans to volunteer or send boys to Day Camp. It will serve as an
introduction to those unfamiliar with the Day Camp program and as a reference
and refresher for those who are day camp veterans.
The guide has been put together with the help of the directors; advisors and
staff of the Tidewater Council to better explain what Tidewater Council Day Camp
is all about. The guide does not go into detail of what each individual camp’s
day-to-day operation is like.
Each camp is planned and conducted by a camp director and program director. They
are Conducted with the assistance of volunteers such as yourself. Indeed without
the assistance of a large number of parents and volunteers day camps could not
occur. Each den of eight to ten scouts needs a den leader and assistant den leader.
Each activity station also needs at least one adult; many such as crafts, shooting
sports and games need more than one. We ask that your pack sign up as a group
and provide one adult for every four Scouts registered. These adults can help
out the entire week or they can trade off, just as long as each day is covered.
This will aid substantially in providing adequate adult supervision for the dens
and aid the camp directors in providing a great day camp experience for the scouts.
The common factors at all Tidewater Council Day Camps are:
• Having a lot of fun!
• Emphasis on sports to help earn Cub Scout Sports Belt loops.
• Learning about nature.
• A theme to serve as a binding thread to Scout spirit and activities.
• Activities geared toward earning credit for the next rank.
• Having a lot of fun!

PIPSICO Basic Info
Cliffs 60 to 75 feet high overlook a picturesque mile long sandy beach and several cypress tree coves. The cliff walls are studded with marine shells and fossils providing tangible evidence of the James River's influence on life over the centuries. The beach has proven to be a beach comber's delight for discovering nautical treasures like shark teeth, prehistoric whale bones, driftwood and a peaceful observation site for beautiful shoreline sunrises and sunsets.
Tidewater Council purchased this land in 1958. It has been preserved and maintained as close to its natural state as possible. The "Red Trail" hiking trail that encircles the reservation provide a variety of visual and ecological wonders for hikers of all ages to marvel at. Along the trail you may chose to stop and see the "Pipsico Tree," a tulip poplar nearly 20 feet in circumference that predates the arrival of the first English colonists or stroll along the sandy beach of the James River and observe the flight of the bald eagles that nest on the reservation. As you hike through the wooded areas imagine yourself as one of the early settlers and experience the history that is part of this land!
Camp Lions offers a wide variety of activities and programs that enable Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers to earn awards while having fun! During the Boy Scout resident camp weeks, the aquatics' program includes instruction in swimming and fun! During the Boy Scout resident camp weeks, the aquatics' program includes instruction in swimming and lifesaving, along with sailing, rowing, water-skiing, motor boating and canoeing on the James River. Other supervised instructional activities include field sports, ecology/conservation, scoutcrafts and handicrafts.
During Cub Scout resident camp, Cub and Webelos Scouts, along with their adult camping partners, participate with den and pack leaders in a theme-related outdoor program that spells fun and excitement for all! Programs present a variety of structured and camp-wide events. The Cub Resident Program includes swimming, archery, BB guns, handicrafts, sports and nature. Many special activities are scheduled during the sessions, including competitions, games and campfires.

Welcome
to the Blue Ridge Mountains Scout Reservation–over 16,000 acres
of Scouting Adventure!
We would like to personally thank you for choosing the Reservation for
your unit’s 2005 summer camp experience. With a unique, unparalleled
program, an experienced, handpicked staff and an emphasis on customer
service, it is no wonder that our eight camping programs helped deliver
the promise of Scouting to over 8,823 participants from 26 states and
3 foreign nations in 2004. We are excited about the summer of 2005 and
anticipate that our staff and facilities will exceed your expectations.
Those familiar with camp will note that we’ve added some new and
innovative programs to keep camp fresh and have firmed up some of our
traditional programs with new equipment and techniques.
This guide utilizes a user-friendly format that makes important camp information
and
documentation available to all unit members. There are two major parts
to this guide: the white administrative section which provides general
information needed for all programs and the color coded sections providing
information on a specific program such as Mountain Man or Camp Ottari.
For example, if your unit is only participating in the New River Adventure
Program, then by simply removing the Administrative section and the color-coded
New River Adventure section, you will have all the information necessary
to plan for a successful week of high adventure.
In order to prepare for a successful summer, we would encourage all Scoutmasters
and senior patrol leaders to thoroughly review this guidebook. Guidebook
is available on website (bsa-brmc.org). If you have any suggestions or
questions concerning a program, please feel free to contact the camp directors
or Council Service Center. We hope that you are as excited as we are about
the great experience ahead. We look forward to seeing you this summer
at the Blue Ridge Mountains Scout Reservation.
