    Tips for regatta sailboat builders:

• Reduce "drag" by making all surfaces as smooth as possible. A good design has all leading edges rounded and trailing edges tapered to reduce the drag.
    • Make sure to sand with coarse and then smooth sand paper to smooth out hull.
    • With the help of an adult, use a sharp knife for cutting any grooves for the
keel and rudder. A dull knife will crush and splinter the balsa wood.

    • A potato peeler is good for carving the shape.
    • Do not apply too much paint to the outside unless you sand between each coat.
    • Be careful not to get glue on the outside of your boat. Glue can interfere with smooth operation.
